The FoundationFootprint™ Carbon and Energy Program for Schools

As part of its corporate social responsibility program Revolution ID has joined with Gladstone Primary School  in Mount Albert, Auckland to trial a student run Carbon Footprint for Schools Program. The program teaches students how to assess the carbon footprint of their school and its community (staff, student families and school suppliers) and identify where waste, resources, water and costs can be reduced.

The program is designed to have students perform a fun yet realistic exercise over a number of weeks to develop a carbon footprint report for their school based on international Greenhouse Gas (GHG) accounting standards, specifically the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and ISO 14064. Students perform their own energy, water and waste audits both at school and at home and then design and implement a series of resource reduction initiatives.

The students collect the initial data, called their baseline, in a web based carbon footprint management tool as a base for comparing future emissions. They then set up reduction targets against their baseline and update the system with monthly information from bills and physically monitoring the schools use of resources to track their performance.

The program is designed to be run every year and is currently being documented to create a package that can be rolled out at other schools without outside expert guidance. The ultimate goal is to have children understand the impact that they and their community have on the environment and know how to reduce it.
